How is the school year structured? What is a “quarter”?

Secondary schools in the San Diego Unified School District have moved from a traditional semester system to a “quarter” system for the 2020-21 school year.

What is the difference between a progress report and a report card? How do I interpret a citizenship grade?

Progress reports represent progress completed since the start of the class. Progress report grades are not recorded in a child’s academic history. Report card grades represent a final grade for the course.

Citizenship grades represent non-academic performance in class. Dana uses a 3 point citizenship grade rubric.

We developed a job-aid to assist parents with understanding how academic and citizenship grades are awarded, how to calculate a GPA, and how to interpret citizenship grades. Follow this link to view the grading job-aid for parents.

NOTE: This job-aid references the traditional semester structure used at secondary schools, not the quarter structure used this school year. Concepts and definitions still apply.

 When are grades distributed?

  • Our first progress report grade, S1P1, will be issued for classes that students took during the first quarter between August 31st and October 2nd. Students will ONLY receive progress report grades and citizenship marks for the classes they attended during this time. Any classes not yet attended will have NO grade or citizenship reported.
  • Our second progress report grade, S1P2, will be issued for classes taking place during the second quarter starting on November 2nd. This progress report grade will represent work completed between November 2nd and December 4th.
  • Final grades representing all work completed during the first and second quarters will be issued in January. This grade will appear in the PowerSchool parent portal as Semester 1 (S1).
  • We will follow a simular pattern during the second half of the school year.

How do I view grades in PowerSchool?

Parents will use the PowerSchool Parent portal to view progress report and report card grades on or after the dates referenced above. Use this job-aid to learn how to use PowerSchool to view grades.

Parent accounts follow the student as they move from school to school. The account you used last year to view student information will work this year as well.

How do I create a PowerSchool Parent Portal account?

PowerSchool Parent Portal account information was emailed to parents in September. Parents will use the account information to create their own parent account. Use this job-aid to learn how to create a parent account.
