GATE Testing FAQs

Every child will be offered GATE testing in grade 2. If the student is tested and is not identified for the GATE Cluster program, they may be reviewed for retesting in grade 5. If the student is tested in grade 2 and is identified for GATE Cluster, they may be reviewed for retesting for possible GATE Seminar in grade 5. After grade 5 there is no further testing available. Placements must be made at that point by the school site.

Students who are new to the school district will be tested when their school is tested in grades 3-5.

Students will be administered, at most, two tests. The district distributes a list of students eligible for re-testing to the school site during the Spring. Families of eligible students will be contacted once their child has been identified.

Dana Middle is scheduled to conduct GATE testing during the month of April. A list of students eligible for testing will be provided to us in March. Families of students who qualify for testing will be notified via a letter and/or a telephone call.

Please see below for retesting criteria. Students who do not meet the retesting criteria are not eligible to be retested.
GATE Retest Criteria

Our staff was notified on February 4, 2019 that the SDUSD GATE Office had modified the retesting criteria. The criteria are below

  • RETEST criteria for students not yet identified for GATE Cluster (5th grade only): Previous CogAtscore of 85 percentile and Above Standard in all areas of English Language Arts and Math performance areas on the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) assessment.
  • RETEST criteria for students not yet identified for GATE Seminar (5th grade only): Previous GATEidentification and Above Standard in all areas of English Language Arts and Math performance areas on the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) assessment

Whenever a child is retested, the highest score will remain as the test score of record. The retest may not be scheduled fewer than six months after the previous test because of test familiarity.

Q: What is the CogAT?

A: The CogAT is the test administered by the SDUSD GATE Department for the purpose of identifying students for the GATE program. The CogAT replaced the Raven during the 2015-16 school year.

Q: My child was recently tested. What happens next?

A: The results of your child's GATE test will be distributed to you (via your child) within approx. two months. In the event your child qualifies for the GATE/Seminar program, any potential schedule changes will be implemented during the next school year. We do not make schedule changes during the existing school year.
