SDUSD GATE Placement Criteria

The SDUSD GATE Office has developed a weighted placement process for identifying students for GATE Cluster and GATE Seminar. The district criteria includes the following items:

  • Your Student's Score Cognitive Attributes Test (CogAT) Assessment
  • Academic Achievement - No more than one CAASPP standardized test score below 4 (ELA or Math) at end of previous year OR score of 4 in ELA or Math on 4th grade report card
  • Economic - Eligible to receive a free or reduced lunch
  • Second Language - CELDT score of intermediate or below
  • Special Education - An active IEP or 504
  • Relocation - Three or more school moves due to military relocation or during elementary school years

The total number of points calculated from the items above are applied to the criteria below:

  • Total Points - Less than 120 = not identified for GATE
  • 121-134 = GATE Cluster
  • 135 or above = GATE Seminar

The SDUSD GATE office has asked for policy concerns to be sent to their email address at Dana staff members are unable to answer questions related to the rational behind the criteria above or the fact that 6th grade students in the San Diego Unified School District are not re-tested for GATE. Please direct these questions to the email address above.

Occasionally we place non-Seminar identified students in Seminar classes when space becomes available. Student placement is based upon a class list ranked by CogAt score, SBAC ELA scores, and ELA grades. Our team offers enrollments to families in order according to the list when they become available. In the event a family declines, we contact the next family on the list. You do not need to request to be placed on this list. You will automatically be called when space becomes available.
