May 26th - 29th Memorial Day

Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for mourning the U.S. military personnel who have died while serving in the United States armed forces. All schools will be closed on both days.

Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Unofficially, it marks the beginning of the summer season.

Clarifying Misleading GATE Seminar Letter

Some parents recently received a misleading email from the SDUSD GATE office during the week of May 17th. The email was sent from the [email protected] email address and contained the following statement:

“You are receiving this message because your child was recently identified as GATE Seminar. Please visit the San Diego Unified GATE Website to download, complete, and submit the GATE Seminar Intent to Enroll form if you would like to request placement in a Seminar class. Each school site sends home the report you will need to attach to the form. Please reach out to your child’s school if you need additional support or have questions regarding the GATE programming at their site.”

This email was sent to parents by a central office staff member without the knowledge of site leadership. This email contains misleading information which can lead to confusion.

  • You do not need to send a “letter of intent” to participate in the GATE program. The Point Loma Cluster leadership makes the assumption that all students will want to participate in programs they qualify for, and as a result we will place the student in the recommended classes unless otherwise notified. We have followed this policy for the last ten years.
  • Dana Middle offers an Honors Program instead of a GATE Seminar program. Students are offered access to our most rigorous courses based upon a variety of criteria including grades, test scores, and reading assessments. Correia Middle and Point Loma High follow this model as well. Please follow this link for more information.
  •  All students identified as GATE Seminar are automatically recommended for placement in Honors.
  • Our site previously distributed a GATE letter to the families of children who participated in GATE testing. You can view a generic version of this letter here.

We apologize for the confusion this may have caused.
